Florida Oceanographic Society
October 15, 2025
Topic: JBGC has supported FLOS’s Camp Discovery for years. It offers exciting, hands-on experience for children aged 5 to 16. Campers dive into coastal ecosystems through themed focused weeks like Coastal Critters, Seaside Scientist, Snorkeling Reef Fish. Campers are given the chance to explore local wildlife, habitats and marine life up close while learning about conservation and coastal stewardship. Each week, camp is designed to spark curiosity and foster a love for the ocean and waterways through fun, age-appropriate science and exploration.

First up is Georgia Fowler, who will demonstrate how to separate orchids and repot plants. Edible and Historical Medicinal Native Plants
November 19, 2025
Topic: Discover the beauty and benefits of planting native herbs and edibles that have been used for generations. In this talk, our speaker will address grown conditions these plants require., how to use them in your kitchen, traditional remedies and which ones serve as vital host plants for butterflies. Whether you’re a beginner or season gardener, this lecture will inspire you to cultivate a more resilient, pollinator-friendly garden rooted in history.
Speaker: Diane Goldberg is a certified Florida Master Naturalist, and a Florida Master Gardener, and a graduate of Barry University. She serves as the conservation chair for the St. Lucie County Audubon Society and for the Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County: both supporters of the Right to Clean Water Initiative.

The Nathanial P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuges

Topic: The Nathanial P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge stands as a vital sanctuary dedicated to preserving the unique coastal ecosystems of South Florida. With a mission to foster meaningful connections between people and nature, the refuge has inspired, educated, and trained generations of naturalists and nature lovers. Its programs deepen appreciation for the region’s habitats and diverse wildlife. Dr. Griffin will share insights into the refuge’s legacy and future impact.
Speaker: Dr. Jill Griffin is the Executive Director at the Hobe Sound Nature Center. With a dual degree in Biology and Anthropology and a Ph.D. in Marine Biology, Dr. Griffin leads the dedicated team of educators, naturalists, and support staff.

Succulents Through the Ages
February 18, 2026
Topic: Learn all about succulents, how they are classified, how societies have used and valued them, the role they played in early America today’s society. Our presenter will explain their economic, medicinal and cultural value.
Speakers: Kimberly Helms is the owner of Bountiful Bonsai and Sensational Succulents nursery located in West Palm Beach. She grows most of her succulents at her state certified nursery. She is a member of the Wellington Garden Club, and her home and gardens have been on the Wellington Garden Club Tour and the Mounts Botanical Garden Tour, where she was a volunteer.

The Magical World of Butterflies
March 18, 2026
Topic: Today we delve into the world of caterpillars and butterflies that most people do not get to see. Our presenter has raised and released approximately 9,000 butterflies over the past ten years. Julie will share her knowledge and experience and have live creatures that will be available to view after the presentation.
Speaker: Julie Norsworthy is a Master Gardener specializing in butterflies.
