Florida’s Flora – Stories in History

February 17, 2027

What does Florida's state tree, the sabal palm, have to do with the American Revolution? What do the cookies we ate as kids have in common with an endangered butterfly? Or cattail reeds with raising babies? Just like a seed, history has been sown into the very ground we walk on and the plants we pass every day. Professional horticulturist and Florida native Carly Batts will present a fascinating look at Florida’s endemic plants and their surprising connections to—and often their role in shaping—our own human history.

Speaker: Carly Batts is owner of B the Change Native Plants and Landscape Designs, a native plant nursery in Fort Pierce. A Florida-Friendly Landscaping Certified Professional, she holds a degree in environmental science from Stetson University and is pursuing a master’s at the University of Florida. Carly is a past president of the Native Plant Society Martin County Chapter and recipient of the Garden Club of America’s Weesie Smith Horticulture Award.
