Garden Committee Projects - An Update

By Pat Jones, Garden Committee Co-Chair

The Garden Club has been very busy lately, and we’re thrilled to share all the great progress we’ve made!

🌿 Hoke Library – June 2

A big thank you to the 10 volunteers who came out to help! We trimmed bushes back by 3 feet, and thanks to Linda Menikheim’s battery-operated hedge trimmer, the work went a bit easier. The graffiti on the turtle has been successfully removed. Annie suggested purchasing four more coontie plants, since they thrive when planted in clusters of three. If the budget allows, we’ll plan to add these soon.

🌸 Downtown Jensen Beach – June 9

Many volunteers joined us to place orchids throughout the downtown area. The effort was a great success and really brightened up the space!

🌳 Arbor Day at Langford Park

The Garden Club proudly donated a beautiful Poinciana tree for Arbor Day. Mark Lynch and Dana coordinated with county staff, who planted the tree and will continue to water it until it’s well established. A nice photo was taken of the county team—Garden Club members can plan a separate photo op if desired.

🌼 Log Cabin Refresh

Phase 1 of the Log Cabin planting was a huge success! Fourteen volunteers worked an impressive 3 hours and 45 minutes in the heat. Thank you all for your dedication! We now need volunteers to help with watering every other day for the next two weeks to ensure the new plants take root. Dina and I will finalize the watering schedule ASAP.

🌱 Support from ROTC

ROTC volunteers were a big help and worked hard throughout the day. The Colonel mentioned they’re willing to assist with future projects—an exciting offer we’ll gladly keep in mind. We also took advantage of free mulch from the county, which worked out well. We'll plan a mulch refresh in the fall.

🌺 Upcoming Projects

We’re currently waiting on the county to grind down the claradendrum stump. Once that’s done, we’ll plant the LaFrance hibiscus tree along with muley grass and agapanthus. A special thank you to Stacie Latham for her wonderful landscape design and organizing the planting materials.

We are deeply appreciative of every volunteer who came out to help—we couldn’t do it without all your help!

A big thanks to everyone!
